The plot to kill Raja Raghuvanshi was hatched in February 2025, months before his wedding to Sonam Raghuvanshi.
During the investigation it was confessed by the alleged killers that the conspiracy involved multiple plans to eliminate Raja.
The accused, including Sonam’s alleged boyfriend Raj Kushwaha, considered various schemes, such as, faking Sonam’s disappearance by drowning her in a river, killing another woman, placing her body in Sonam’s scooter, and burning it to make it appear as if Sonam had died.
The group made several attempts to kill Raja, the first plan was to murder Raja at the Kamakhya temple in Guwahati, but it was aborted due to logistical issues.
Further attempts were made in Nongriat and Mawlakhiat, but they failed.
The fourth plan was to kill Raja in the Dawki area, near the Bangladesh border.
The accused ultimately killed Raja in Sohra by hitting him with a machete which was bought by the killers from Guwahati and the victim was pushed into a gorge near Weisawdong Falls.
The investigation has revealed that the murder was a pre-planned conspiracy, and the accused were friends and acquaintances of Raj Kushwaha, who participated in the crime as a favor to him, rather than for monetary gain.
The Meghalaya police have arrested five accused, including Sonam Raghuvanshi and Raj Kushwaha.
The court has remanded them to eight days of police custody, and the police intend to file a chargesheet within 90 days. Raja’s family is demanding a fast-track trial and maximum punishment for the culprits.
