The Nokrek Area Development Committee (NADC) has written to Power Minister Abu Taher Mondal to plead for the electrification of Mekalpagre village in South Garo Hills, which remains unconnected to the state’s grid.
The NADC said that residents are forced to rely on candles and kerosene lamps even more than five decades after statehood.
“This severely affects the quality of life, especially for students and the elderly,” the NADC said. “This is also one of the remotest villages in South Garo Hills, which falls under Chokpot constituency. This village is mostly neglected by politicians and officers due to its remoteness.”
While neighbouring villages have been hooked up to the grid, Mekalpagre has been “overlooked due to negligence and lack of representation.”
