Shillong, Sep 27: Four labourers working on an underground septic tank in Rangdokram, South Garo Hills, died of suspected toxic gas inhalation on Sunday.
According to reporters, two labourers were trying to open the lid of the septic tank when they suddenly collapsed after being exposed to the gas inside. The two other victims rushed to their comrades’ aid but were also overcome by the gas.
The four were all residents of the South Salmara-Mankachar district of Assam. They were identified as Mofidur Rohman (34), Ajiyer Rahman (41), Ismail Hussain (20) and Rakib Hussain (22).
Two Fire and Rescue Service personnel also reportedly became unconscious while attempting to rescue the labourers. They were given immediate medical attention.
The rescue operation was made difficult because the septic tank was underground. Police had to dig through the surrounding soil in order to gain access.
Reports suggested that the septic tank did not have a proper gas outlet or soak pit, which could be the reason for the accumulation of gas inside. Further details regarding the incident are expected from the authorities.
