Shillong, Oct 28: Leader of Opposition Dr Mukul Sangma on Wednesday said the state police must be insulated from forces that seek to use it for their own advantage.
Speaking after the State Security Commission meeting, Sangma said he made it clear that posting and transfer of police officials must be free from interference.
“Not only political interference, it can be influenced from many other forces, even non-government actors,” he said.
Sangma said the Meghalaya Police Act, 2010 provides the organisation the cover to enforce that mandate, adding that a system is already mandated in law to insulate the force.
He said several concerns were discussed and initiatives taken on issues raised in the last meeting were reviewed, noting that there is a sincere attempt by the police organisation.
On security, he said the meeting discussed perceived attempts by former militants of erstwhile organisations to regroup. The trend visible in preceding years has now slowed down, he said, but added, “There is no room for complacency, alertness and engagement is crucial.”
On vacancies, Sangma said sanctioned posts must be filled urgently as they were created based on felt need, adding that more personnel are needed for traffic management in the city.
“Traffic management is not everybody’s cup of tea. You cannot just put anyone and expect them to manage,” he said.
