Shillong, Nov 5: Deputy Chief Minister Prestone Tynsong today said that the recent arrest of five individuals for extorting money is not proof that the outlawed Garo National Liberation Army (GNLA) is regrouping.
Recently, police in South West Khasi Hills arrested several individuals, including a juvenile, for extortion in the name of a faction of the GNLA.
“There is no regrouping of that sort. Of course a group of criminals were there. They wanted to commit criminal activities. Now we are taking care of and we will not spare anybody who crosses the line and limit,” Tynsong, who holds charge of the Home Department, said
Tynsong also said that the government is proactive on the matter and takes action when information is received.
An FIR was registered at Nonghyllam police station on October 28 that the victim received an extortion note claiming to be that of the GNLA and also received threatening calls from an unknown phone number.
Based on the FIR, police began a hunt and arrested one suspect identified as Mann R Marak (25) of Upper Rajapara, South West Khasi Hills.
Based on his confession, four more suspects, including a minor, were arrested, police said. Those arrested are Marson R. Marak (18) and Babulin D Sangma (27), both of Upper Rajapara and Tartus N Marak (20) of Mulapat. As per established practice, the juvenile was not named.
