North Eastern Hill University (NEHU) Vice Chancellor Prof. Prabha Shankar Shukla today said that the National Education Policy (NEP), 2020 can play a major role in addressing the dropout rate of Meghalaya, which is around 10 per cent.
Shukla in a statement today, after attending the inauguration of the Akhil Bharatiya Shiksha Samagam to mark the third anniversary of NEP in New Delhi, said the dropout rate in the State is a serious concern and the NEP provides facilities like multiple entry and exit which will allow students to re-enter the higher education system at any stage of their life and with the help of Academic Bank of Credit (ABC) where their records will be digitally stored.
He said the university has already implemented the NEP for the Post Graduate (PG) students’ from the academic session 2022-23. While, for the Under Graduate (UG) the University has already circulated the letters to all the affiliated colleges of NEHU to implement the NEP from the upcoming academic session starting from August 1, 2023.
“The New Education Policy will definitely play a very vital role in the overall development of the entire educational eco-system in Meghalaya. The policy allows to follow the traditional knowledge systems to futuristic technology, opting new innovative ways that will empower our students to do innovation, become entrepreneur, carry out quality research work and man,” he said.
Shukla said the policy is very powerful tool which focuses on the early childhood care, curriculum and pedagogy change, assessment and exam reform, teacher training and evaluation on a broad scale and many. The policy not only focuses on the development of students but also focuses on the overall development of teacher’s as well. The role of teacher is the most important aspect for shaping a bright, secure and empowered future for the students and thus it becomes crucial that the teacher is capable enough to provide the latest and updated exposure to the students, he added.
