Shillong, Sep 8: The North East India Citizens Forum, Delhi (NEICFD) has strongly condemned the brutal killing of renowned Manipuri musician, guitarist and music teacher Chongtham Vikram Singh, allegedly assaulted by a group of men outside his residence in South Delhi.

The forum has demanded a prompt, impartial and thorough investigation and called upon Delhi Police to identify and prosecute every person responsible strictly in accordance with law. It said all CCTV footage, eyewitness accounts and other evidence must be examined, and the complete motive and circumstances established, including any possibility of prejudice or discrimination.

It appealed to the Union Home Minister to take personal cognisance and ensure urgent, transparent investigation, and sought concrete steps for the safety of Northeastern people in Delhi.

“Delhi is the capital of every Indian. Every citizen has the right to live with safety, dignity and without fear,” Convenor Mathiaupuang Gonmei said.

The forum also expressed disappointment over inadequate coverage by sections of mainstream media of the incident, saying the brutal killing of a respected musician and cultural figure in the national capital deserves serious public attention.

“Violence against people from the Northeast must not be treated as a lesser news story or allowed to disappear from public discourse. The media has a responsibility to provide fair, responsible and proportionate coverage,” it said.

NEICFD said Singh was a distinguished son of Manipur and an important figure in the State’s Western and rock music movement, having performed with prominent bands and devoted himself to nurturing young musicians. His death is a profound loss to family, musical fraternity and people of Manipur and the Northeast, it said.

Extending deepest condolences to the bereaved family, friends, students and admirers, the forum said it stands firmly with the people of Manipur and demanded justice for Singh.
