The Hynñiewtrep Youth Council (HYC), Shella area unit today held a send-off function for three youths from Shella village, who will represent the state at the 36th National Games Aquatic Championship to be held in Gujarat.
Financial assistance of Rs 5000 to each of the swimmers was handed as a token of best wishes.
HYC general secretary, Roy Kupar Synrem congratulated the swimmers for being selected to represent the State in the national championship. He also lauded athletes from Shella for winning 10 medals in the last Meghalaya Games.
He lamented that the government fails to create infrastructure in areas with the potential to bring home medals even as coaches are not appointed in swimming.
Synrem urged the government to implement the State Sports Policy in letter and spirit so that the objective of the policy is realised and youths are encouraged to take up sports seriously and become an alternative employment opportunities for talented youth.
He further encouraged youth to work hard despite hardships and not to lose hope but concentrate on sports and bring laurels to the State.
