The closing function of District Level Nasha Mukt Bharat Campaign was held today at Tpep Pale Community Hall, Jowai.
Additional Deputy Commissioner L. Kynjing who attended the function as the chief guest said the Nasha Mukt Bharat Campaign is one way to generate awareness about the ill effects of substance abuse, to create solutions and to intervene to help a person overcome addiction. He further called for cooperation from all sections to keep the District free from substance abuse.
SURE secretary, Rev H H Mohrmen in his introductory speech said that the reason for conducting the Nasha Mukt Bharat Campaign as West Jaiñtia Hills District has been identified as one among the 272 most affected districts in the country as most affected vulnerable in terms of substance or drug abuse. He said instead of stigmatising those persons with drug dependence, let us be the catalyst of change for the betterment of society.
Speaking about the positive response received during the campaign Project Director of Mihmyntdu Community & Social Welfare Association, Jowai, Dr.J N Shullai said there is a need for a de- addiction centre in the district to help the clients to control the drug addiction in the district.
The District Social Welfare Officer and the District Administration, West Jaintia Hills in collaboration with Manbha Foundation, Jowai, Society for Urban and Rural Empowerment, Jowai. Industrial & institutional Ministry KJP Synod Mihngi, Jowai, Mihmyntdu community & Social Welfare Association, Jowai and Scope foundation Mukhla had conducted and organised various awareness programs in schools, villages, communities and centre’s to create and help identify those with drug dependence.
