NAS lambasts NEHU over negligent online exam paper checks

The Niksamso A’chik Society (NAS) has accused the North Eastern Hill University (NEHU) of neglect in checking the examination papers.

NAS, through a press release referred to the case of law students who require 50 per cent of aggregate to qualify for practicing in any courts.

“In spite of their struggle and efforts, NEHU has dumped their papers without proper check and has given everyone margin marks, with most getting below 50 per cent aggregate. It is impossible that the majority of the students have done so badly,” NAS general secretary, Tengrak R Marak said.

He pointed to the state’s position in the recent National Achievement Survey where it secured the lowest literacy in the country.

“Students feel like fish out of water despite their struggle and effort. The state cannot blame the students or institutions. They fail to discern their own negligence and irresponsible attitude towards education and both the state government and NEHU have reduced the certainty of students’ futures. They are discouraging the students instead of uplifting them,” Marak alleged.

NAS further pointed to Meghalaya being the fifth poorest state within the country, discerning the neglect of the state government in uplifting the quality of education and their own failure in creating job opportunities, as two reasons for the current situation.

“If students are neglected, everything is neglected. Stop killing the future of students and the future of the state,” the general secretary added.

He also requested that provisional and other certificates be issued from the NEHU Tura campus, for the students of Garo Hills arguing that it was only wasting money of the students.

“It is not easy going and coming from Shillong in a day. It takes a minimum of two to three days to get a sheet of paper from Shillong NEHU campus. While we are in the process of celebrating the state’s golden jubilee, nothing has improved to make the life of students easier,” felt Marak.

NAS requested that NEHU take the lives of students more seriously and take up the matter of provisional certificates from Tura with immediate effect. Further it has asserted that it would continue to raise the matter until the situation was improved for the student community and their demands fulfilled.
