Shillong, Apr 21: Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma today attended the Silver Jubilee celebration of the Montfort Teacher Training College for Special Education at the Montfort Centre for Education, Danakgre, Tura.
Speaking on the occasion, the chief minister stressed on the need of shifting societal attitudes towards special education. He stated, “The biggest change required in society is a change in mindset.”
The chief minister said institutions like Montfort do not view special education as a burden but as an opportunity to make a meaningful impact by promoting dignity and equality, allowing all individuals, regardless of their background, to be treated with respect and care.
He highlighted the historic importance of the college, noting that it was inaugurated 25 years ago by the late P.A. Sangma. At that time, there were no other training institutes for special education in the entire North East, making Montfort the first of its kind in the region, he said.
The Chief Minister also spoke about the MOTHERS (Meghalaya Outcome Transformation in Health, Education, Rural Development, and Social Welfare) drawing parallels with the work of faith-based institutions. He called for collaboration in achieving shared goals for societal development.
Established through the pioneering efforts of Bro. John Baptist in 1985, Montfort has evolved into a comprehensive institution dedicated to inclusive education. With the formal school commencing in 1995, followed by the introduction of integrated education in 1996, the Centre now provides services for children with disabilities. The Montfort Teacher Training College, inaugurated in 1999 by the late P.A. Sangma, to address the growing demand for trained special educators.
Throughout its 25-year history, Montfort has trained over 600 special education teachers, significantly contributing to the educational landscape of the Northeast. Currently, over 200 children with disabilities are integrated into the mainstream school alongside more than 1,000 students.
