The All India Garo Union (AIGU) has submitted its views on the reservation policy to the expert committee that the status quo should be maintained.
In a statement issued today, the union said any kind of modification should be avoided as it will hurt the sentiments of the Garo.
“In case there is a modification in the existing policy, it will hurt the Garo people and their sentiments will be badly hurt, which will not be in the interest of the entire Meghalaya. There is a chance of riots. So, in the larger public interest, the status quo should be maintained,” AIGU president Elbarth Marak said.
The union said that the reservation policy has been well balanced and served its purpose well since 1972. “Currently the ratio of reservation among the different communities of Meghalaya is in a fine equilibrium and any kind of amendment is absolutely undesirable,” the AIGU added.
It further stated that the cry for review of the policy is being raised by shenanigans of a political party for political expediency and gains, under the wilful guise of inequality and with utter disregard to the Garo people.
