Shillong, Jun 3: The Department of Environment and Traditional Ecosystems (DETE) at Martin Luther Christian University organised The Himalayan Cleanup 2026 today, starting at the university’s Nongrah campus and in the locality up to the river and Lapalang market area.
The event brought together students, faculty and staff in a collective effort to promote environmental responsibility and sustainable waste management and was conducted as part of the larger Himalayan Clean Up movement, which seeks to generate awareness on waste management challenges across the Himalayan region while encouraging long-term behavioural change towards a cleaner and healthier environment, a press release stated.
Participants engaged in the collection, segregation and auditing of waste, followed by responsible disposal of the collected materials.
A key feature of The Himalayan Cleanup campaign is that it extends beyond the act of cleaning. Similar initiatives conducted across the Himalayan region have demonstrated the importance of waste audits in understanding local consumption patterns and identifying the prevalence of single-use plastics and other non-biodegradable waste streams.
