In a joint effort to address the impact of recent flooding, Jirang MLA accompanied by Ri Bhoi Deputy Commissioner Abhilash Baranwal and officials of the NHAI and PWD today visited St. Jude Secondary School in Byrnihat to assess its needs and ensure the continuity of learning for students.
Heavy and continuous rainfall caused flooding in several areas of Ri-Bhoi in and around Byrnihat completely submerging roads and making movement nearly impossible. The school was forced to declare a holiday as floodwaters not only filled the school compound but also entered the classrooms.
During the visit, teachers and local village leaders highlighted the persistent hardships caused by the floods in the area and appealed to the visiting officials to take immediate steps to widen the drainage systems in the locality to prevent further flooding.
Sohtun and Baranwal assured the public that swift action would be taken to address the issue. They emphasised that work would commence soon to mitigate the impact of heavy rainfall in the future so that residents of Umpher no longer suffer flood-related damages to their homes and properties.
The officials also assured of finding a permanent solution to the flooding problem, which has become a regular challenge during the monsoon season.
On the need to expand drainage systems, Sohtun said he would take up the issue with Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma to initiate a dialogue with the Assam government so that the neighbouring state can also coordinate plans to widen its drains.
