The Khun Hynniewtrep National Awakening Movement (KHNAM) candidates for Laitumkhrah-Malki and Sohryngkham, – Peter Shallam and Joseph Pyngrope – today filed their nomination papers for the upcoming Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council election.
Pyngrope stressed the issue of influx affecting trade. He vowed to streamline the matter of trading by non-tribals if people choose KHNAM candidates in this district council election.
He also said that KHNAM, as a movement, has worked tirelessly for the welfare of the indigenous people.
Shallam asserted the need for the KHADC to address the problem of landlessness and poverty among the rural the populace, environment degradation and revamping the Appointment and Succession of Chiefs & Headmen Act 1959.
Independent candidate for Sohryngkham, Kris Kharsati, said his main aim if he is elected will be to make the appointment and recruitment system in the district council transparent for the betterment of the youth.
Hill State People’s Democratic Party (HSPDP) candidate for Mawsynram, Starfing Pdahkasiej, said that he wants to see the various Himas under the jurisdiction of the KHADC have their laws and rules. He said out of 54 Himas, only 22 have their laws, while 4 are awaiting approval from the Governor. He said there are 6 Himas under the Mawsynram constituency that are yet to have their laws.
