Shillong, Aug 22: India delivered a composed and commanding performance to earn their second straight victory at the SAFF U-17 Women’s Championship 2025 as they defeated Bangladesh 2-0 at the Changlimithang Stadium in Thimphu today.

Pearl Fernandes (14’) and Bonifilia Shullai (76’) were the scorers for India, who led 1-0 at half time. The win also consolidated India’s top spot in the group. They have 6 points with two wins from two matches.

Meghalaya’s Bonifilia scored after coming on as a substitute in the 62nd minute. She perfectly volleyed home a corner, which was taken by fellow Meghalayan Alisha Lyngdoh, who featured in the starting line-up for the second time.

Speaking after the game, Bonifilia said, “I feel very good and confident because the one thing on my mind before going on the field is that last year when we played Bangladesh in the SAFF U-16 Championship we lost both matches (one in the group stage and the final), so I had the mindset that I would go out there and score and make a difference because it’s such an important game and the team has been working very hard for this and they deserve the win.”

The entire team has been working very hard, she said, adding thanks to her team mates, coaches and support staff for their support. “I am feeling more confident and boosted for the upcoming matches. We only have one thing in mind – to win the SAFF,” she added.

Earlier, the Young Tigresses looked focused and alert from the get-go. Their defence was rock-solid, denying Bangladesh even the faintest sniff of goal. The central defensive pairing stayed compact, while full-backs tracked runs diligently. Whenever the line was breached, goalkeeper Munni was in the perfect position to effect saves.

With such defensive assurance, the midfielders took charge, spraying passes wide and keeping Bangladesh constantly on the turn. India’s early pressure paid off swiftly.

In the 14th minute, centre-back Divyani Linda made an inspired run from deep, picking up a loose ball and bulldozing her way through the midfield. As defenders converged on her, she smartly laid it off to Pearl, who had been left unmarked at the edge of the box. Given the time and space, Pearl unleashed a powerful left-footed effort. Though Bangladesh keeper Yearzan Begum got her gloves to it, she couldn’t keep it out.

India beat Nepal in their opening game two days ago. India will next face hosts Bhutan on Sunday at 2:30PM India time.
