Shillong, Sep 2: The 40,000-seater football stadium coming up at Mawkhanu in New Shillong is expected to be ready by the second half of 2028, Sports and Youth Affairs Minister Wailadmiki Shylla said during an inspection of the project.
Shylla visited the construction site at Mawkhanu village today and took stock of the progress of the Rs 732 crore project, interacting with engineers and architects involved in its development.
Located about 30km from Shillong, the stadium is being built to meet international standards prescribed by FIFA and the Asian Football Confederation (AFC), with the facility envisioned to host international football matches.
The project, funded by the Meghalaya government, is planned as more than just a football venue. The stadium complex will feature a natural-grass football pitch, training facilities and a football academy to be operated by NorthEast United FC.
Other proposed amenities include a gymnasium, swimming pool, tennis and squash courts, a clubhouse, restaurants and public open spaces.
During the inspection, the minister was briefed on the progress of construction and the facilities planned as part of the larger sports complex. He also visited the shooting range at the site and reviewed the work underway there.
After reviewing the progress, Shylla said he was satisfied with the pace of work and expressed confidence that the project would be completed within the scheduled timeframe.
