Shillong, Nov 25: Hundreds of primary school teachers from Meghalaya took part in a nationwide protest at Jantar Mantar in New Delhi to oppose the mandatory Teacher Eligibility Test (TET).
The protest, led by the All India Primary Teachers’ Federation (AIPTF), saw over 50,000 teachers from across India unite against the ruling.
Meghalaya was represented by the Khasi, Jaintia, and Garo regions under the All Meghalaya Primary School Teachers Association (AMPSTA) and APSTA. The associations expressed concerns over the impractical deadline, which they say puts pressure on experienced teachers.
The protest was spearheaded by the All India Primary Teachers Federation (AIPTF) to draw attention to this issue affecting 3 million primary school teachers.
The associations from Meghalaya affirmed their support to the AIPTF’s legal challenge to the order, emphasising the need for a more feasible solution for thousands of serving teachers.
The Supreme Court has ruled that all in-service teachers with more than five years of service left must pass the Teacher Eligibility Test (TET) within two years to continue in their jobs. Teachers with less than five years remaining are exempt from the job requirement but will not be eligible for promotion unless they pass the test.
