The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted the return of severe rains to Meghalaya and other north-eastern states this week.
According to the IMD, much of this intense weather will be fuelled by the prevailing monsoon trough, although a cyclonic circulation over the Bay of Bengal may also aid in this matter.
The combined effect of the weather systems will result in light to moderate showers drenching most of Northeast India over the next five days, that is, till July 7, the IMD said.
As per the IMD’s prediction, heavy to very heavy falls (64.5 mm – 224.5 mm) will pelt isolated parts of Meghalaya, Assam, Arunachal Pradesh, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram and Tripura over the next five days.
According to the IMD, only Meghalaya and Assam received ‘normal’ amounts of rain in June, while Arunachal (309 mm against normal of 439 mm) while Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram and Tripura (244 mm against normal of 342 mm) reeled under rainfall deficits.
