Meghalaya has been ranked as the fifth most literate state in India with 94.2 per cent, as per Periodic Labour Force Survey for 2023-24 released by the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation.
Mizoram topped the national literacy chart with 98.2 per cent, the highest in the nation.
Nagaland has emerged as the third most literate state in India, with an impressive literacy rate of 95.7 percent, placing it just behind Lakshadweep (97.3 percent) and ahead of traditionally high-ranking Kerala (95.3 per cent).
The total literacy rate of India, including all individuals (men and women), aged 7 and above from rural and urban populations, account for 80.9 per cent for the period 2023-24.
To identify potential for intellectual and educational progress, the literacy rate is a crucial indicator of a country’s economic progress; according to the Office of the Registrar General of India, a person aged 7 years and above who can read and write with understanding in any language is considered literate.
