The residents surrounding the Ringre stream in Tura have again voiced serious concerns over rising pollution caused by the dumping ground of the Tura Municipal Board located in Rongkhon Songgital.
The issue is not new. The landfill site has been experiencing issues with waste management, including spills into a nearby cemetery and the stream that flows to the Ganol River and then to the famous tourist destination, the Pelga Waterfalls.
Residents have complained that the garbage from the dumping site has fallen into the stream as fears of pollution and diseases loom large, especially for those residing downstream of the Ringre.
Last year, when a complaint was raised about garbage spill to the nearby cemetery, the State government had assured that it was working with a specialised agency to clean up the landfill and potentially other locations in the state, stating it aims to witness the significant changes within 12-18 months.
While the district administration said steps have been taken to ensure that waste does not spill into the stream, the ground reality is different, residents said.
Till date, no transformation is seen even as construction of a wall as promised have not materialised, the residents said, adding, the problem has persisted especially with the rains.
