An agripreneur from East Jaiñtia Hills district won two awards at the Sustainable Agriculture Summit held on August 7 in New Delhi.
Self Denial Lyngdoh, a farmer who turned a coal mining site in into a green forest, was awarded for promoting environment-friendly organic agriculture and his initiative to preserve the environment.
Lyngdoh, who hailed from Sutnga, is also the chairman of the Thwai Syiem Society. He devoted his years planting mandarin and other trees in a 100 acre coal mining site ever since unscientific mining of coal was banned in Meghalaya in 2014. Now the barren and dry land that had suffered damages due to coal mining has been transformed into a forest.
The award ceremony was organised by Agriculture Post and IndiAgri.
Lyngdoh received the award from Rajya Sabha MP Sanjay Kumar Jha in the auspicious presence of the Union Minister of State for Social Justice and Empowerment Ramdas Athawle and Brazilian Ambassador to India HK Kenneth Felix Haczynski.
