Health minister, James Sangma today said that only 12 per cent of students in the State opt for Science as their subject after their board examination because they have no clear basic concepts in Mathematics.
Addressing the closing function of a two-day workshop on ‘Mathematics Thro’ Origami’ held at the Shillong College conference hall, the minister said the with no basic concepts on the subject this leads to math phobia among students.
Sangma hoped that the workshop will change the way a student looks at mathematics especially at the school level.
The workshop was jointly organised by State Council of Science, Technology & Environment (SCSTE), Meghalaya and Mathematics Department, Shillong College which was supported and catalysed by NCSTC, DST GOI, as part of the National Mathematics Day Celebration which will be celebrated on December 22, the Birth Anniversary of Srinivasa Ramanujan, the great Indian Mathematician.
The objective of the workshop is to train and disseminate all the knowledge resources from the workshop to different schools in the State in the near future.
The resource person at the workshop were V.S.S.Sastry, Mathematics Communicator from Vigyan Prasar , New Delhi where the Maths Ambassadors of the SCSTE and Mathematics Honours students of Shillong College participated.
