Sixteen years after the crime was committed, one Riang Najiar has been found guilty and sentenced to 10 years rigorous imprisonment for the “unforgiveable and reprehensible” crime of raping his own daughter back in 2008.
At the time, the girl was just 9 years old and Najiar in his mid-50s. The child’s mother had died in or soon after childbirth.
A press release from the West Jaintia Hills Superintendent of Police said today that Najiar “mercilessly and atrociously” raped his own daughter, betraying the trust placed in him as a parent.
He was convicted by the Sessions Judge of West Jaintia Hills, NA Khan, who sentenced the rapist to 10 years rigorous imprisonment.
The court also ordered that compensation of Rs 3 lakh be paid to the victim in acknowledgement of “the profound trauma and stigma she has endured.”
