Shillong, May 20: Police arrested a man for allegedly operating a Facebook account that uploaded sexually explicit content targeting women with vulgar language.
The accused, identified as Newbard M Sangma alias Bethuel of http://A.chak Jangkigre, Williamnagar, has been booked under Williamnagar PS Case No. 21/2026. The charges include Sections 75(IV)(3) and 79 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, read with Section 67 of the Information Technology Act, 2000.
Authorities said the investigation began after inputs that the accused had been habitually posting vulgar material on his Facebook account and YouTube channel, both publicly accessible. The recent Facebook uploads were found to be obscene and attracted provisions of the BNS and IT Act.
East Garo Hills District Police said that uploading, transmitting, or publishing sexually explicit content on social media is a cognizable cyber offence under the Information Technology Act.
Aggrieved persons can report such cases to police through proper channels. Complaints may also be filed on the National Cybercrime Reporting Portal, the official platform for reporting online obscenity, child sexual abuse material, and cyber-blackmail.
