The Maitshaphrang Tourism Promotion Group has announced a protest in front of the Secretariat building to save the Lumpongdeng Island, located in the middle of Umiam Lake from being taken away from its care.
Chairman of the group Michael N Syiem said the Meghalaya Energy Corporation Limited, Corporate Affairs has informed that the lease of the island would not be extended beyond December 31, 2024, and February 15, 2025.
“We have no objection to the decision not to extend our lease agreement but we appeal to the government for financial support to assist our employees, who are now elderly. We request this assistance to recognize our time and efforts in transforming the island from an unknown, uninhabited location 27 years ago into an attractive tourism destination,” Syiem said.
Syiem said that before the group took over the management of the island in February 1997, unauthorised individuals would drive onto the island in four-wheeled vehicles when the water level decreased and cut down trees for firewood and timber.
He added that now the island is lush with greenery because they have halted the felling of trees. As a result, the trees have grown and matured, now valued at several crores. The top portion of the island has become a nesting site for various species of eagles and a habitat for armadillos.
“After years of promoting the island as an ideal and safe camping site, an increasing number of young people are visiting during the holidays. Furthermore, after constructing a houseboat in 2008—the first in Northeast India and the only one in the state—the island has become a favourite tourist destination, not just among Indian tourists but also foreigners, particularly as a honeymoon getaway for newlyweds and writers. It has been featured in several travel magazines,” he stated.
Syiem also mentioned that the growing number of tourists has positively affected the Tourism Department, which has seen increased revenue from boating activities associated with the island.
Since 1997, they have employed a family of four who serve as caretakers, security, housekeeping, and food providers for the island and its visitors.
Syiem said the protest will be held from Monday to Friday between 11 am to 4 pm.
