Banlamkupar Rynjah, one of two Meghalaya teenagers chosen in a list of 31 probables for the Indian U-17 national football team, was given a warm send-off by residents of Nongkynrih village on Friday.
Rynjah plays for Shillong Lajong FC locally. He and Manbhakupar Malngiang, of Lah Bet FC, were included in the list and will attend a camp in Srinagar in preparation for the SAFF U-17 Men’s Championship 2024.
Friday’s send-off was organised by the Nongkynrih Football Club Association (NFCA).
Rynjah comes from a poor family and has four siblings and was raised by a single mother.
Sohra MLA Gavin Mylliem described Rynjah as a remarkable young footballer.
“Banlamkupar’s journey from Mawkhar SC to Shillong Lajong FC and now to the national stage is a source of immense pride for our constituency. His dedication and talent have earned him the opportunity to potentially represent India’s U-17 team,” Mylliem said. “Banlamkupar, your hard work and determination have brought great honour to our community. We are all incredibly proud of you and wish you the very best in your training camp and future endeavours.”
On the occasion, a friendly U-15 football match between Lajong and Nongkynrih FC was also held.
