The Lady Keane College and the Meghalaya Social Development Society (MSDS) organised PEP (People Education Programme), an awareness programme of various schemes of the central and state governments, for students recently.
The programme was sponsored by the central government’s Khadi and Village Industries Commission (KVIC).
The whole purpose of the programme is to disseminate information to students so that, on completion of their studies, they can apply for various schemes for generating self-employment. White collar jobs have become saturated and students should not lose hope but concentrate on becoming job providers instead of job seekers, KVIC Director Mange Ramsaid said.
Entrepreneurial students planning on launching their own ventures can apply online or through the office of the KVIC, he added while lamented that the Prime Minister’s Employment Generation Programme (PMEGP), which was launched 16 years ago, has not been taken up that much in Meghalaya compared to other states.
As it happens, Lady Keane College Principal, D Khlur B Mukhim, started his career in the Khadi Board as master trainer in beekeeping, he narrated. To improve his life, he began a Master’s course at NEHU and set up a photocopy shop at the university in 1987, which still exists, thanks to a bank loan.
Prior to the main event, there were debate and essay competitions. The debate was won by Tulsi Payeng and Bidisha Gogoi. In the essay competition, the first prize was won by Rinni Okram while Akansha Borgohain bagged second place and Suhana Nongrum third.
