Scientific experts of the ICAR-Krishi Vigyan Kendra, Umiam recently made a field visit to impart technical guidance to farmers on fish based integrated farming system.
The experts, Dr. M. S. Baruah and Bankitkupar Mukhim visited the farmers’ field of Elbert Roni Ramde and Babiangbah Kurbah at Liarkhla village and suggested them to maintain the numbers of pigs and poultry based on the size of the pond within the integration.
They also advised them to introduce improved breeds of ducks and poultry breeds to enhance their income.
The KVK in a press release said such guidance and training is important for better productivity and production.
One such farmer who has benefitted from the KVK is Monlang Thangkhiew of Nonglakhiat Pdeng village of Bhoirymbong Block.
The farmer had been practicing traditional or conventional pig farming of rearing one to two local pig for meat purpose only, and because of this the income he received was very little. “Based on the advice of KVK Ri Bhoi with proper training, now from his Hampshire crossbreed pigs within a period of 21 months the farmers was able to produce 50 piglets for which he sold them Rs 4000 per piglet,” the statement said.
