The Khasi Students Union (KSU) in the Jaintia Hills region has urged the Jaiñtia Hills Autonomous District Council (JHADC) not to grant no objection certificate for installation of railways in the East Jaiñtia Hills district.
The union submitted a letter to the district council today and the reminded of its stand against railways since 1988. Leaders of the KSU question the resolution taken by the Meghalaya Assembly on introduction of inner line permit in the state and said without the mechanism they will not accept railways.
“Inner Line Permit (ILP) must be implemented first in Meghalaya to check migration before the coming of the railways can be considered,” the KSU said.
Meanwhile, the Federation of Khasi Jaiñtia and Garo People, East Jaiñtia Hills district also wrote to the Chief Minister to make their opposition to the idea of railways without ILP.
The letter was submitted through the Deputy Commissioner. The organisation also demanded repair of the national highway 6 before railways is considered.
