Shillong, May 10: In a political shift in West Khasi Hills, former Rambrai Jyrngam MLA Kimfa Sidney Marbaniang resigned from the National People’s Party (NPP) along with his supporters and announced the formation of a new platform, the Rambrai Jyrngam United People Forum.
The decision was taken at a meeting held at Marbaniang’s residence in Rambrai. Supporters also submitted a mass resignation letter to the NPP leadership.
Marbaniang was appointed chairman of the new forum, while Kitborlang Lyngdoh was named secretary.
Marbaniang had been an MLA until 2023. He was elected in 2018 on a Congress Party ticket but, with that party in disarray, he quit to join the NPP in 2022.
However, he lost the 2023 election to an independent, finishing a poor third in the race. In recent days there has been suggestions that the sitting MLA, Remington Gabil Momin, will join the NPP at some point, and that could leave few options for Marbaniang.
