The Khun Hynñiewtrep National Awakening Movement (KHNAM) has urged Meghalaya’s MPs to prioritise the protection of the indigenous tribes’ identities.
Thomas Passah, KHNAM vice-president, spoke to Highland Post and highlighted the importance of safeguarding the tribes’ identities, which has become a top priority given the concerns of the past decade.
Passah emphasised that the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA), Uniform Civil Code (UCC), National Population Register (NPR), National Register of Citizens (NRC), One Election One Nation and other initiatives will have a significant impact on tribal communities regardless of their political affiliations.
“If these issues are not addressed properly, all will eventually fall prey to their adverse effects,” he warned.
Passah went on to state that the manifestos of political parties contesting the ongoing general election to the Lok Sabha only express concerns about certain issues but offer no solutions or ways to protect minorities.
He hopes that the newly elected MPs will step up and lead the way to protect the identity of the tribes in Meghalaya.
