Meghalaya’s lone Rajya Sabha MP, WR Kharlukhi, has called for unity among North East legislators for the greater good of the region.
The National People’s Party (NPP) MLA said that unless there is unity the issues facing the North East will continue to be overlooked and voices from the region will be unheard.
“The NPP was founded with this vision and we want to make it a reality. Division and isolation will not benefit anyone. We need to unite to advocate for our issues and ensure our voices are heard in Parliament,” said Kharlukhi.
He pointed to the violent unrest in Manipur as a clear indication that the concerns of the North East are not a priority for the central government.
He also noted that the issue regarding the anger over the administration of North-Eastern Hill University (NEHU) is taking a long time to resolve.
The North East region has 25 Lok Sabha and 14 Rajya Sabha MPs across its eight states.
“Imagine if we all united our efforts and collaboratively addressed the issues of the North East in Parliament. I am confident that this would generate a stronger response from the central government regarding the important matters affecting our region,” Kharlukhi added.
