The race for the North Shillong constituency race is getting very personal, with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) candidate calling for an inquiry into the collapsed dome at the new Assembly building, which was, as it happens, overseen at the time by his National People’s Party (NPP) rival Ransom Sutnga.
At the time of the May 2022 collapse, Sutnga was Executive Engineer in the Public Works Department (Buildings) Department. He subsequently took early retirement and was named as NPP candidate for North Shillong.
Speaking to reporters, Kharkrang, a former senior police officer, said that all these incidents need to be investigated as public money was involved and the government cannot take the citizens for a ride.
The building was nearing completion when the dome collapsed suddenly, putting a sudden halt on construction work. It has been more than 20 years that Meghalaya has been without a permanent Assembly building.
