The district administration of Ri-Bhoi, through its Executive Magistrate, and the police closed down a toll gate operated by the Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC) on National Highway 6 at Umdihar today.
The KHADC toll gate collected fees from goods carriers plying along the highway. The council had been ordered to close these down by the state government some months ago and had agreed to do so in June.
Owners and drivers of goods carriers expressed concern over the numerous toll gates that have mushroomed along the national highways over the years.
On receiving the complaints, the Deputy Commissioner of Ri-Bhoi issued an order to close down the toll gate located at Umdihar along and today the Magistrate and police put it under lock and key.
