The formal airing of Mawkynrew 89.60 FM Community Radio at Jongksha was held today, with local MLA Banteidor Lyngdoh inaugurating the service, a first for rural Meghalaya.
The North East Centre for Technology Application and Reach (NECTAR) set up this community radio station, which is like a normal FM station. Informative programmes on education, health, environment, agriculture and local music will be beamed directly to the people of the rural community.
The project is a unique initiative of the communication division of NECTAR, under the leadership and guidance of Arun Kumar Sarma, its Director General.
This community radio project is entirely funded by NECTAR amounting to Rs 60 lakh and will be operated by the village dorbar of Jongksha, which will help in promoting agriculture, rural livelihood and community development to more than 100 isolated villages with a population of approximately 35,000 people under Mawkynrew block and adjacent rural areas.
Speaking on the occasion, Lyngdoh said that he is proud to see that the first radio station in rural Meghalaya has come up in Jongksha.
Lyngdoh also thanked the Sordar of Jongksha, Olet Kharsohnoh, for taking the initiative to start this radio station in collaboration with NECTAR.
He also said that through this radio station people from other places can get more information about Mawkynrew, especially of the beautiful tourist sites that the area is blessed with.
Lyngdoh also said that students can make use of the radio station to get tutorials on various subjects like mathematics, science and other subjects, free of cost.
