Unidentified miscreants stole as many as 27 water pipes belonging to the Jal Jeevan Mission (JJM) scheme, which had been installed to supply drinking water to two villages in the Killing area of Ri-Bhoi – Jorbil and Umlangpur.
The theft and damage of these water pipes have caused significant hardship to the residents of both villages as the loss of the pipes has resulted in an acute shortage of drinking water since the incident occurred.
The JJM project implemented to provide drinking water to these two villages involved an expenditure of approximately Rs 3 crore.
According to information gathered, the theft came to light after villagers lodged complaints with the village authorities regarding the disruption of water supply. Upon inspection, the village authorities discovered that miscreants had excavated and stolen 27 water pipes, leading to the drinking water crisis in the two villages.
Following the incident, police were informed and an FIR was lodged at Khanapara Police Station.
