Robinus T Sangma, the convenor of the Meghalaya unit of the Janata Dal United (JDU) today expressed his unhappiness at a steep hike in the price of rice.
According to Sangma, the price of rice in Williamnagar has skyrocketed from Rs 700 for a 50kg bag in the first half of January to Rs 1,500 for the same bag at the end of last month. He has also looked into the price in nearby Dudhnoi, Assam, where the price is Rs 7,200 per 50kg.
“What is the reason for the big difference between Dudhnoi and Williamnagar?” he questioned in a press release today. “What makes the price of rice so high that it is beyond reason and unaffordable for the people of Williamnagar?”
He requested that district officials look into the matter as rice is a staple and the high cost will place a huge burden on families.
