The All Jaintia Muster Roll Workers and Labour Union has written to the Labour Minister regarding five major grievances with a hope that they be resolved by the state government.
In the letter dated yesterday, the union said that its members are seeking the implementation of the Regular Casual Workers Scheme 1996 and recognise those daily minimum wage workers who have served for 10 years. The union also wants the senior-most regular casual workers to be considered for half of all Grade 4 posts when vacancies arise in government departments.
The workers also want the retirement age of daily minimum wage workers to be increased from the standard 58 years to 60, “ensuring that workers can continue to contribute to their roles and benefit from extended service.”
Those daily minimum wage workers who have completed more than five years of service should also be upgraded in category from unskilled to semi-skilled workers, “aligning their status with their experience and contribution”.
The memorandum also stated that the Maternity Benefit Act 1961, amended in 2017, should be implemented for daily minimum wage workers and that the workers should also have the benefit of the Employees’ Provident Fund (EPF) scheme to enhance their social security and provide long-term financial stability.
