A reported kidnapping bid of a child from Laitumkhrah Presbyterian Higher Secondary School that gave anxious times to parents and citizens turned out to be a case of “misunderstanding.”
East Khasi Hills Superintendent of Police Sylvester Nongtnger today said that the two individuals who had gone to the school yesterday had voluntarily appeared to Laitumkhrah police station after learning of the allegations of an attempted kidnapping.
Nongtnger said after investigation it was determined that the individuals were, in fact, relatives of the child in question. “They had arrived to collect their nephew, who was a student in the KG class.”
He said the confusion started when the two used the child’s pet name, which was unfamiliar to the class teacher, instead of the official name. Interestingly, the pet name coincidentally matched the name of another child in the same class, leading to the misunderstanding.
Nongtnger said the concerned parents of both children, along with the Principal and class teacher of the school appeared at the police station to clarify the situation.
“The matter has been verified and confirmed that the case is one of misunderstanding,” he added.
