In a new revelation regarding a city businessman who stabbed his wife, his daughter alleged that police were protecting him and discouraged her from taking the side of her mother.
Devyani Singh, daughter of Suresh Prasad Singh who was arrested and under seven days judicial custody for committing the crime, told the press that her father is an influential man who is also the Director of Shillong Club, Shillong Golf Club and Rotary club.
She revealed before the media about the day Singh attacked his wife, Poonam. “I was in my room when my mother and father were having an argument about groceries. As soon as I heard my mother screaming I came down and I saw my father stabbed her with a kitchen knife,” she said.
Devyani said the police have registered the FIR under “wrong section and now are trying to protect him”. She said she wants the case to be handled by someone who cannot be influenced by her father.
According to her, the officer in charge of Laban Police station, Naushad Khan tried to convince her not to let the case go further. “I don’t want that. My father has been abusing my mother for a while now and I don’t want this to be buried like the previous cases. Last case that was registered was when he hurt my mother’s hand and she had to get stitches. The police did not react to this and I don’t want the same to happen now,” she said.
The daughter said her father had fled after committing the crime and saw him return the next day to their home. “I hid behind the car and informed the police immediately because it would have been the perfect moment for the arrest. But that officer said he needed the OC’s written form and they didn’t show up.”
Devyani also said that she had gone to the police station to find out more. “The OC tried to convince…tried to counsel me not to do anything for the next two hours,” she said.
An audio record of the OC was also made available to Highland Post. The OC can be heard telling her what will happen if the father decides to give away the property to charity and how she will pursue her studies.
Devyani who now wants justice for her mother also mentioned that her parent’s case was taken up by the Meghalaya State Women’s Commission in 2017. “My father tried to make my mum crazy and gave her medicine without knowing. The women’s commission back then was biased because of how much influence he has and they told my father that I was the one who was brainwashed.”
She said the present commission is not defending her father.
Devyani said that if the police were pro-active and acted in the past perhaps the situation would not have arisen.
Meanwhile, she said her mother had undergone surgery and was admitted to the ICU of Shillong Civil Hospital.
