Khasi Students Union (KSU) President Lambokstarwell Marngar has stated that the responsibility for the implementation of the Inner Line Permit (ILP) now lies on the shoulders of every KSU member as the government of India has undermined the rights and voices of the tribal people.
Marngar said this during a meeting held at Dkhiah West near Khliehriat yesterday where 130 new members from East Jaintia Hills joined the union.
He also criticised a recent statement from Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma, who said that no one will be allowed to take the law into their own hands when it comes to restricting people from outside the State entering Meghalaya.
In his reply Marngar said, “The voice that came from the Secretariat said that NGOs will not be allowed to take the law into their own hand but the fact remains that the lawmakers are not implementing laws for the interest of the indigenous people of the State. I saw that from now onwards the law rests on our shoulders, in our localities and our villages to protect the indigenous tribe.”
