The Federation of Khasi Jaintia and Garo People (FKJGP) has sought appointment of a tourism officer to manage and promote tourism in East Jaintia Hills district.
Through a memorandum submitted with the Deputy Commissioner, the FKJGP said the absence of a full-fledged tourism officer has significantly impacted the development and promotion of tourism in the district.
Pointing out that tourism plays a vital role in the local economy and having a tourism officer is crucial to ensuring the effective management of tourist-related activities, the organisation said visitors often struggle to find relevant information about local attractions, accommodations, events, and others. This leaves a negative impression on tourists, reducing their overall experience, the FKJGP added.
The organization said that without a tourism officer, the district not only misses out on potential tourism campaigns, partnerships, and events that could drive more visitors to the district but locals and businesses are often left without a point of contact to address tourism-related challenges or improve services for tourists.
The FKJGP said it is sad to have encountered this kind of situation, despite having a separate district without a tourism department of its own.
