Big FM’s Big Futsal Fest began today with several high scoring games enthralling spectators.
Dubbed Shillong’s first inter-office futsal competition, the tournament is being contested by government and corporate office teams. Present at the opening were Sports and Youth Affairs Minister Shakliar Warjri and cabinet minister Alexander L Hek.
Four games were played on the opening day. NEEPCO defeated ITI Shillong 7-2 with David Kurkalang netting four goals for the winners. The highly accomplished AG Meghalaya team easily overcame Banalari Motors 4-1 while MeECL saw off SP’s Office, East Khasi Hills 7-6 in the most thrilling match of the day. The last encounter was between PHE Department and MUDA, with the former winning 7-3.
In his speech Warjri highlighted the state government’s efforts to promote sports, especially football through its flagship programme Mission Football, and pointed out that initiatives like the Big Futsal Fest fits perfectly with the government’s ongoing endeavour to enrich the state’s sporting calendar.
Sixteen office teams are taking part in this knockout tournament, which is being held in Langkyrding here. The final will take place on September 14.
