The All Meghalaya Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan School Teachers’ Association (AMSSASTA) has said that the recent decision of the Cabinet to increase the age limit for recruitment of SSA teachers to 45 years is just an eyewash.
President of the association, Peter Thyrniang said that the cabinet decision to increase the age limit will benefit only a few teachers.
According to Thyrniang not all teachers who are about to reach 45 years will be able to compete with fresh graduates.
However, the AMSSASTA teachers said that they welcome the government’s decision even as it added that not all will benefit from it.
The association’s president said that the SSA teachers of the state should not be swayed by the cabinet’s decision to increase the age limit for recruitment into SSA schools but to concentrate on the issues at hand.
The association on October 21 had decided to call off their sit-in demonstration, after the state government assured that their salaries will be hiked. They have been on a sit in demonstration since October 1.
The association also said that the teachers should not believe rumours that the scheme will end on March 31, 2026.
The AMSSASTA also said that it will hold meetings all over the state to make aware about the association’s demand starting with Nongstoiñ, West Khasi Hills district on November 1, 2024.
It may be mentioned that the AMSSASTA demand is to increase the salary of the SSA teachers by 100 per cent, whereas another set of SSA teachers, the Meghalaya Samagra Siksha Abhiyaan School Association (MSSASA), wants the government to absorb the teachers from the society to the Education department.
