In a joint operation conducted by Nongpoh police station and village authorities, a raid was conducted on a shop where fuel was illegally being sold in Quinine village, leading to the seizure of nearly 200 litres of petrol and diesel.
The shop is reportedly owned by one Omiwell Marbaniang of Shangbangla village, near Quinine.
According to Ri-Bhoi police sources, the raid resulted in the seizure of approximately 101 litres of petrol and 84 litres of diesel, allegedly being sold to the public at very high prices without proper authorisation.
The shop owner claimed to have purchased the fuel from petrol pumps for resale. However, police suspect that at least some of the fuel may have been stolen from mobile phone towers or procured through other unauthorised sources.
Police also clarified that petrol pumps are not permitted to sell fuel in containers or drums, as such practices could lead to misuse or involvement in illegal activities that may pose risks to public safety. This restriction was implemented to curb the use of petrol bombs during disturbances. Additionally, police maintained that selling fuel without proper licences or permission from the relevant regulatory authorities is illegal.
Police are continuing to investigate this particular case.
