Shillong, Jul 10: Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK) and the Division of Animal and Fisheries Sciences (DAFS) at ICAR Research Complex for NEH Region, Umiam, celebrated the 26th National Fish Farmers’ Day 2026 today.
The KVK held a training programme on ‘Disease Management in Carp Culture’ along with the distribution of quality fish fingerlings to fish farmers of the district.
The programme aimed to enhance the knowledge and skills of fish farmers on the prevention, diagnosis and management of common diseases affecting cultured carps, thereby promoting healthy fish production and improving farm productivity. During the technical session, participants were trained on pond biosecurity, water quality management, disease symptoms, preventive health management and best management practices for sustainable aquaculture.
The programme was attended by Mokidul Islam, Principal Scientist and Head of KVK Ri-Bhoi. As part of the celebration, quality fish fingerlings were distributed to the 15 participating farmers to encourage scientific fish culture and enhance fish production in the district.
Meanwhile DAFS held a programme for around 100 villagers from ICAR-adopted villages of Ri-Bhoi.
Speaking as chief guest, Umroi MDC Isynei Hinge reiterated the importance of community participation in ensuring the success of fisheries development initiatives at the grassroots level. He urged the farmers to take maximum benefits from ICAR for their overall development related to fish farming.
Delivering the keynote address, G Kadirvel, Director of ICAR-RC-NEHR, Umiam, underlined the need for enhancing fish productivity, area expansion and mahseer breeding as key thrust areas for the region and advised the farmers to adopt a holistic approach towards fisheries development by actively participating in the Aqua Village Model being promoted by the institute.
The day-long programme was followed by a technical session on awareness-cum-demonstration of quality fish seed production at the ICAR fish farm, followed by distribution of critical inputs to the beneficiaries wherein 300 fish seeds produced at the ICAR farm were provided to each farmer.
