Shillong, May 13: The Hynñiewtrep Youths’ Council (HYC) has raised concerns regarding the recent blanket cancellation of the NEET UG examination for students from Meghalaya and other northeastern states due to alleged irregularities.
The NEET (UG) 2026 exam held on May 3 by the National Testing Agency (NTA) was cancelled on May 12 amid allegations of paper leak which is now being probed by the CBI.
The group has urged the National Testing Agency (NTA) to reconsider its decision in light of the hardships faced by genuine students who participated fairly in the examination.
HYC education secretary Enlang Sawian highlighted that many students from Meghalaya, often coming from economically disadvantaged backgrounds, travel long distances under challenging conditions to sit for the examination. He said that for numerous candidates, NEET represents a critical opportunity for pursuing medical education, which could drastically uplift their families and communities.
In its letter to the NTA, the HYC pointed out that there have been no credible reports of examination compromise within the state. They firmly believe that the integrity of the examination process must be maintained; however, it should not unjustly punish innocent students from remote regions.
The HYC has requested the NTA to adopt a more equitable approach, exempting Meghalaya and other northeastern states from any re-examinations, considering the lack of proven misconduct in these areas.
The HYC appealed for compassionate reconsideration by the NTA, placing emphasis on justice and fairness. They assert that while the integrity of national examinations is paramount, the mental well-being and future prospects of hardworking students must also be safeguarded.
