The Hynñiewtrep Youths’ Council (HYC) has added its voice to objection over the proposed eco-tourism project at the Nongkhyllem Wildlife Sanctuary, citing concerns over the potential harm to the refuge’s fragile ecosystem and rich biodiversity.
In a representation to the Additional Director General of Forests (Wildlife) and Director, Wildlife Preservation-Member Secretary, Standing Committee of the National Board for Wildlife (NBWL), the HYC urged the authorities to stop the project forthwith and refrain from granting any approval or permission for tourism activities within the sanctuary.
The project has already seen opposition from green groups and traditional community leaders of Raid Sohkhwai.
The pressure group argued that the project, being implemented by the Eco-Development Society of Meghalaya, would have a devastating impact on the sanctuary’s flora and fauna, including several endangered species. The council pointed out that the sanctuary is a global biodiversity hotspot and home to over 50 species of mammals, 25 species of reptiles and numerous bird species.
The HYC also raised concerns over the lack of necessary approvals and clearances for the project, including permission from the Standing Committee of the NBWL and the Supreme Court.
The council urged the authorities to keep all plans and activities in and around the sanctuary in abeyance until all necessary permissions and approvals have been obtained.
