The Youth Wing of the Hills State People’s Democratic Party (HSPDP), West Khasi Hills District, has requested the State government to install artificial turf and develop sports facilities in the district.
In a memorandum to Minister of Sports and Youth Affairs Shakliar Warjri the party youth wing said youth from Nongstoiñ, Mawshynrut and Rambrai, have shown immense potential and enthusiasm in various sports disciplines, despite the lack of adequate facilities.
It noted that the absence of proper sports infrastructure, including quality playing grounds, artificial turf, and multipurpose indoor and outdoor sports complexes, continues to hinder the growth and development of young athletes in the district.
The youth wing requested the installation of artificial turf football grounds in Nongstoin and Rambrai to promote football and enable year-round training and matches, regardless of weather conditions, establishment of multipurpose sports complexes with facilities for indoor games, such as badminton, table tennis, and volleyball, as well as gymnasiums and training halls for physical fitness, upgradation of existing fields and infrastructure, including proper fencing, drainage systems, lighting, and seating arrangements for players and spectators, Development of grassroots sports programs and youth engagement initiatives to identify and nurture local talent, with coaching and support staff being appointed accordingly.
Additionally, it requested support towards archery development in West Khasi Hills. In the memo to the minister, the Archery Association of West Khasi Hills had also sought government intervention in strengthening the growth of archery in the district.
They stated that archery has grown significantly in popularity among the youth of the district but faces considerable challenges due to the lack of adequate sports materials and infrastructure, including a proper archery ground.
